FAQ – Recipe changes to Terra Canis Light menus
Light products are reduced in calories and specially designed for dogs that are predisposed to being overweight. To achieve the desired weight loss or help your dog maintain its weight after losing it, it is important to follow the feeding recommendations. You should also ensure that your dog receives as few additional treats as possible alongside the light food. These can slow down or even prevent weight loss.
Are the feeding recommendations based on my dog's target or current weight?
The feeding recommendation is always based on your dog's target weight.
What should I do once my dog has reached its target weight?
Once your dog has reached its target weight, you can switch to regular complete feed, provided you continue to follow the feeding recommendations strictly. However, if your dog is prone to gaining weight quickly, you can feed it light products permanently. These products contain all the essential nutrients necessary for a balanced daily diet.
The Terra Canis Light menus have been revised as part of a quality optimisation process. The aim was to adapt the composition more closely to the needs of overweight dogs or those prone to weight gain. The following changes have been made:
- Meat composition: Some monoprotein recipes have been converted into multiprotein menus to provide a wider range of nutrients and maintain consistent fat content, regardless of seasonal variations (game meat).
- Plant components: The new menu contains a blend of improved vegetables, herbs and fibre.
- Energy content optimisation: The fat and calorie content has been adjusted while maintaining a high protein level, which is ideal for dogs with reduced energy requirements. Feeding recommendations have also been adapted to the new recipe.
Have the analytical components (e.g., protein, fat and calories) changed?
Yes, the analytical values have been deliberately adjusted, particularly:
- The protein content has been increased to ensure good muscle supply despite reduced calories.
- There is slightly higher fat and calorie content than before, but it is ideally balanced for dogs with weight problems or a tendency to become overweight without being obese.
Are the new recipes suitable for dogs with allergies?
The Light recipes are not designed for dogs with food allergies due to the complexity of the ingredients. For dogs with allergies, we recommend switching to our Hypoallergenic menus.
If you are in any doubt, please consult your veterinarian or contact our customer service team for personalised feeding recommendations.
Why was the recipe changed?
The revision of the recipes was carried out for several reasons:
- Nutritional optimisation: even better adaptation to the needs of overweight dogs.
- Ingredient availability and quality assurance: more sustainable and stable supply of high-quality raw materials.
- Expansion of the nutrient profile by combining several animal protein sources in a balanced way.
Our goal remains to provide your dog with the best possible nutrition, based on the latest scientific findings.
Why did I receive a different recipe to the one stated in the shop?
During technical transitions, it may happen that the information in the online shop does not immediately match the labels on the cans. In such cases, the information on the can label is correct and binding. We are continuously working to update the shop data. If you have any questions, please contact our customer service team.
When will the new cans be shipped?
The new recipes are already in the shipping warehouse. Depending on stock and order volume, deliveries may still contain a mix of old and new recipes. Each can contains exactly what is stated on the label. For local retailers, the availability of the new recipes depends on individual stock turnover.
Will old recipe cans still be sold to retailers?
No, production of the old recipes has been discontinued. Only cans with the new recipe are being delivered. If you find old products in stores, these are residual stock held by individual retailers over which Terra Canis has no direct influence. If you have any further questions or need support with transitioning your pet to the new food, our customer service team and veterinary consultants are here to help.
Why is Wild being removed as a monoprotein and instead converted into a multiprotein menu?
Wild is integrated into a multiprotein menu to optimize the nutrient balance and provide a better combination of animal proteins. In addition, combining it with low-fat rabbit ensures a consistent, low fat content. Further reasons include greater flexibility in raw material sourcing, which ensures consistent quality and availability. With the new composition, wild remains part of the menu, but now in combination with the low-fat and well-tolerated protein source rabbit.
What can be fed as an alternative if Wild monoprotein was previously used?
For dogs with special dietary needs, we recommend our AliVet line "Low Fat Diet" or, in case of food allergies, our Hypoallergenic line – our customer service and veterinary consultation are happy to help you find a suitable alternative.
