Light menus FAQs

The Light menus have been specially developed for dogs that tend to be overweight or are already slightly overweight. With their reduced fat content, they are low in calories without sacrificing important nutrients. This allows dogs to lose weight healthily or maintain their ideal weight - without starving or being malnourished.
Light menus contain a large portion of healthy fruit and vegetables and nutritious meat. They provide valuable vitamins, minerals and fibre that supply the body with everything it needs - with significantly fewer calories. The dog loses weight but still gets all the nutrients and does not lose muscle mass, for example.
Coconut flour, papaya, pineapple and artichoke leaves round off the Light meals. These ingredients are believed to support fat metabolism in a natural way and can help to maintain healthy blood fat levels. They are also considered particularly digestion-friendly.
Yes. The menus contain everything your dog needs. Among other things, they contain psyllium husks, which can contribute to a better feeling of satiety. The fibre swells in the digestive tract and therefore provides longer-lasting feeling of fullness.
For best results, Terra Canis recommends combining the Light menu with lots of exercise. Walks, play and activity not only help to burn off fat, but also strengthen the heart, circulation and muscles - for a healthy, vital dog at its ideal weight.

Light dog food from Terra Canis

With 3-4% fat content, our light menus are very low in calories. The menus are supplemented with a higher portion of healthy fruit and vegetables. They do not contain calorie-rich grain. We add pineapple, papaya, and high-quality herbs to support a healthy metabolism. Coconut meal and artichoke leaves are also known to have a positive effect on blood lipid levels. Fibre from psyllium husks makes dogs feel fuller. All our raw ingredients are 100% human-grade quality - suitable for overweight and obese dogs. We recommend your dog gets plenty of exercise to help lose weight.

What kind of dogs is our light food most suitable for?

light dog food is most suitable for dogs with weight problems or a tendency to put on weight. This special type of dog food is designed to reduce calories while at the same time providing all the nutrients the dog needs to lose weight. Overweight dogs, older, less active dogs, or dogs that need to maintain their weight following a successful diet will all benefit from light dog food. Obesity in dogs can lead to major health problems such as joint pain, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, and a shortened lifespan. It is important to keep a careful eye on what your dog eats and, if necessary, start him on light food to minimize these risks.

When is a dog considered to be overweight?

A dog is overweight when it weighs more than 10% above the ideal body weight for its breed and size. You can calculate the ideal body weight of your dog using the Body Condition Score, to check how overweight it is . A vet should make the initial body condition score, but owners can learn the technique themselves. Being overweight can lead to major health problems, so it’s essential to see if your dog is putting on weight at an early stage.

Can I give my overweight dog normal food but in smaller portions to help him lose weight?

Unless you change the food, you should not feed your dog smaller portions of his normal food to lose weight. You need to monitor his calorie intake precisely and ensure he is getting all the nutrients necessary for healthy weight loss. light food is specially formulated to provide all the necessary nutrients, while keeping calories low. The light recipe is designed to ensure that the dog is getting easily digestible, low-fat protein, but also to prevent muscle loss, and to ensure that weight is lost from the right places - the fatty deposits.

What are the risks of my dog being overweight?

An overweight dog faces a whole series of health risks and can set a course for chronic diseases. These include joint problems such as arthrosis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, skin complaints and even a shorter lifespan. It is therefore crucial to control your dog’s weight to avoid these serious health problems.

Will my dog feel full after eating the light menu?

Yes. Our specially formulated light menu will make your dog feel full despite the reduced fat content. These menus are carefully balanced and rich in fibre to ensure a better sense of fullness while still providing the necessary nutrients your dog needs.

What treats are suitable to add to the light menu?

For overweight dogs, we recommend low-calorie, low-fat treats such as the Terra Canis “Wufflées” made from pure air-dried lung meat. Rewards can be an important part of training and motivation, but they must be given in moderation and coordinated with light food.

Should I add something to the light food to make it balanced?

Our light menus are already balanced and contain all the necessary nutrients to meet the needs of your overweight dog. As a rule you do not need to add any extra supplements. However, it is always advisable to consult your vet to ensure the food meets your dog's particular needs. The vet can also help you to draw up a suitable nutritional plan for your dog to achieve and maintain its ideal weight. A weight diary has proved to be helpful here. It records what your dog weighs and what it is eating, and it will record important weight loss milestones. The following applies: It is better to lose weight slowly and healthily than to force quick results which, in some circumstances, could cause health risks.
